What Makes a Watch Iconic?
We all have our favorite vintage watches, but what defines a vintage watch as iconic? When we speak of an icon, we usually think of a person or thing that serves as a representative symbol that stands out above the rest.
The word "icon" has a Greek origin meaning "image"; it's derived from the Greek word "eikon," which means image or resemblance. It can be referred to as a person, symbol, thing, or image that is widely admired, especially for having great influence or significance in a particular sphere.
With that broad definition in mind, it still isn't easy to narrow down our top 5 most iconic vintage watches. The world of watchmaking has given birth to dozens of iconic watches over the century, plus its rich, trailblazing history.
Building a vintage watch collection requires considering many factors. Authenticity and condition are crucial, as these details determine whether you own a true historical treasure. You can verify the authenticity of a watch by studying the movement and related documentation. For many collectors, the internal workings of a watch, whether mechanical or quartz, play a crucial role in its appeal. Furthermore, the brand's historical heritage is also essential, as many collectors seek rare and luxurious timepieces with a long history. In choosing our shortlist, we carefully considered the following criteria:
1. Watch models that have stood the test of time and are still in production today
2.Watches that stand out as distinguished due to design or engineering innovations
3. Watches that have become world-famous and remained fashionable throughout the years
4. Watches historically significant due to their involvement in pop culture and/or sporting or historical events
So, without further ado, we bring you five of the most iconic vintage watches of all time, listed in no particular order, according to the team at VDEAR Watches:

Omega Speedmaster "Moonwatch"
Few timepieces are as iconic as the Omega Speedmaster. Like all great designs, it has stood the test of time, remaining timeless and earning more acclaim over time.
When the Speedmaster first appeared, it stood out among many smaller watches. Its easy-to-read design, inspired by the dashboards of Italian sports cars at the time, was immediately popular.
This watch was also highly innovative. It was the first time a tachymeter was separated from the dial. Placing the tachymeter on the bezel not only saved space but also gave the watch a clean and sleek appearance, making it an instant hit and the first mainstream chronograph. Compared to the sophisticated dress watches popular at the time, it stood out remarkably. To this day, the design and appearance of this watch have remained virtually unchanged since its inception.
Of course, what truly etched the Omega Speedmaster into the memories of millions was the Apollo moon landing program in 1969. Edwin "Buzz" Aldrin once strapped his Speedmaster watch to his wrist with a large Velcro strap and took it to the moon. Unfortunately, this historically significant timepiece was lost en route to the Smithsonian Museum and its whereabouts remain unknown to this day. Since then, the Speedmaster has been affectionately known as the "Moonwatch," and its name will forever be etched in our memories.
Patek Philippe Calatrava Ref. 96
There have been many iconic watches created throughout the history of Patek Philippe, but few have gained as much respect as the Calatrava. With its slimline case, minimalist dial and exquisite detailing, this is the watch that has come to most signify Patek Philippe's design philosophy. The epitome of understated elegance, the Patek Philippe Calatrava Reference 96 is considered by many to be the blueprint for the ultimate dress watch. Inspired by the Bauhaus minimalist design principles the watch was launched in 1932 in the midst of the great depression. This influence can be seen clearly in the simple, elegant and non-superfluous design that has become the essence of Patek Phillipe.
The first Calatrava featured a hand-wound movement with small seconds and a plain white enamel dial featuring simple gold-plated batten indices. This was complemented by elegant Dauphine style hands also in gold. In 1953, Patek launched an automatic version of the watch ref. 2526 powered by the legendary 12-600 AT movement. This watch featured several firsts for Patek, an automatic winding mechanism, a Gyromax balance wheel and a water-resistant case. Through the 1970s Patek continued to tinker with the movements until settling on the calibre 324 SC movement that is still used to power Calatrava's today.
The Calatrava is one of the finest examples of a simple and utterly timeless-looking watch. Today, the scarcity of Patel Phillipe watches means that demand continues to grow around the world with less than 1 million Patek Philippe watches said to have been produced since 1839. This is less than what some high-end Swiss manufacturers produce in a year, making genuine good-conditioned vintage Calatrava's the holy grail for some collectors.
Glashütte Original Vintage Collection
The Glashütte Original 1960s collection draws inspiration from the trends of the 1960s, establishing its own distinct style since its inception and now emphasizing a retro aesthetic across all of the brand's product lines. The domed crystal and pump-shaped crown are iconic design features of the 1960s collection. This particular 1960s chronograph is no exception, featuring a retro dial design paired with a dial featuring original patterns created by the brand itself.
Glashütte Original's dial artisans applied black lacquer and then grey lacquer to the brass dial, creating a gradient effect from light to dark, from bright to muted grey-black. The embossed pattern on the dial further enhances the watch's retro feel. Notably, the embossed pattern on the dial is an original design by Glashütte Original, and when combined with the red gold-plated hands and hour markers, it subtly exudes a sense of luxury. The watch features a small seconds subdial at 3 o'clock and a 30-minute chronograph subdial at 9 o'clock. It is powered by the Glashütte Original Caliber 39-34 automatic movement, boasting a 40-hour power reserve.
Panerai Rademir Series PAM02088
Some watches are inherently imbued with a vintage charm, such as the Panerai Radmeer series. In 2025, Panerai launched the new Radmeer 8-Day Power Reserve China Special Edition watch, inspired by Panerai's most iconic classic California dial watch. The watch's cushion-shaped stainless steel case is brushed, presenting a unique vintage, distressed texture. The dial is treated with a black finish to enhance the vintage look, subtly echoing the oxidation effect of early Panerai dials. The California dial generally refers to a unique design where Roman numerals and Arabic numerals are interspersed.
This new Radmeer "Chinese California Dial" retains Roman numerals in the upper half of the hour markers, while the lower half uses Chinese numerals. It is said that Panerai specifically invited the Chinese Panerai enthusiast community to participate in the creation process. The watch is equipped with the P.5000 manual-winding mechanical movement; some watch enthusiasts believe that manual winding is also a manifestation of vintage charm.
Adding a vintage gray-green calfskin strap, this watch, from its appearance to its interior, exudes one word: vintage! The watch is now exclusively available at Panerai boutiques and online in China, with a limited edition of 300 pieces.
ENICAR"Birks of Canada" Chronograph
This brand has produced many beautiful watches in the past – including the Enicar Sherpa, one of its best-selling models – with its own in-house developed movements. In fact, Chronoswiss used the Enicar 165 movement in its Régulateur Automate watch. The Enicar watch company still exists today, but its presence is minimal. This Enicar chronograph with “Birks” engraved on the dial was retailed in Burx, Canada in the 1960s or early 1970s, hence the engraving. It was quite common at that time to engrave the retailer's name on the dial.
This particular Enicar watch is small at 37mm in diameter, but perhaps quite cool considering it houses the Valjoux 72 movement. It's no exaggeration to say that the same movement was used in early Rolex Daytona watches. The case of this Enicar has a C-shaped appearance, which was common at the time. If you don't mind the 37mm size and the fact that there's no "real" watch brand on the dial, it could be a great watch for an individual. Inside, it houses the Valjoux 72 movement, making it the most expensive of these. Priced at $1,599, it's worth including on this list, but you might be able to negotiate it down to under $1,500.
Conclusion
Retro style is a tribute to and nostalgia for the past. In the above five watch models, we see that so-called retro-style watches are not replicas of past works, but rather new classics that bear the marks of a certain era, created by combining modern technology with modern aesthetics and needs.
